2002 Urban Agriculture Symposium program

Introduction

Agriculture is usually associated with the production of food and fiber commodities in rural areas. Agriculture in the 21st century, however, is actually much broader than this–it also includes such diverse items as environmental horticulture (e.g. ornamentals, turfgrass), planning the use of green space, control of insect and rodent pests, wildlife management, and even food production by city dwellers. Our symposium will provide a forum for better understanding these components and will hopefully result in a broadened perception of agriculture.

Mission Statement: To define and describe the components and issues of urban agriculture and examine the common ground and opportunities that exist between urban and rural communities.

Purposes:

bulletFocus on the interrelatedness of urban and rural society, discussing the continuum from all aspects of food, fiber, ornamental plant production and culture to human health and well-being, as an expression of cultural evolution
bulletProvide a meeting forum for persons representing a wide range of activities related to urban agriculture (e.g. agronomy, agricultural anthropology, horticulture, soil science, food systems, entomology, ecology, economics, natural resources) who would not normally come together
bulletImprove visibility and awareness of urban agriculture.
bulletIdentify "next-steps" for moving forward into action.
